Frequently asked questions
General
- Does Schwab consider unsolicited grant requests? Unsolicited requests are not accepted outside of the LOI open call window noted above.
- Can I apply for a grant if I am already a grantee of Charles Schwab Foundation? Current grantees interested in applying for a new grant should direct new opportunities to their Charles Schwab Foundation Partnership Manager.
- How are grant decisions made, and who is involved in the review process? Financial literacy grant proposals from invited organizations are reviewed by Charles Schwab Foundation's grant review team. We evaluate opportunities to ensure strong alignment with our funding priorities and eligibility criteria. Final grant decisions are made by Charles Schwab Foundation's Board of Directors.
Geographic reach
- What qualifies as "national" or "multi-market" reach? We consider grants to have "national" or "multi-market" reach when they engage priority target audiences across multiple states, regions, or cities in the United States.
Process and timeline
- Will organizations be notified if they are not selected to apply for a grant? Yes. All applicants submitting an LOI are notified once application invitation decisions have been made. Due to the volume of requests, we cannot provide individualized feedback.
- What level of funding is available for new financial literacy partners? New grant partners may be invited to apply for a one-time grant ranging between $50,000-$250,000. Grant amounts at the upper limit depend on an organization's compelling case for need, capacity, and alignment to Charles Schwab Foundation's grant criteria. The final grant amount will be determined in consultation with Charles Schwab Foundation's grant review team and Board of Directors.
- Are multi-year grants available, or only one-time support? A very select number of new grants are awarded on an annual basis. While multi-year agreements may be considered, most grants are awarded on a one-year basis. Any future funding is contingent upon available resources and an evaluation of first-year implementation and outcomes.
Recognition and engagement
- What does Schwab look for in terms of recognition? The Foundation may wish to share information about our partnership with your organization. Examples may include:
- Inclusion in a grant announcement press release
- Information on our corporate or Charles Schwab Foundation website
- Digital storytelling and amplification through social media, blogs, etc.
- How can nonprofits best involve Schwab employees in grant partnerships? Volunteering is a key component of how our teammates support our communities. Though not required, if there are volunteer opportunities related to your grant request, please share that information in your application.
- My organization received funding from Charles Schwab Foundation. How do I complete our impact report? A notification will automatically be sent to your organization within three months of your grant date. You'll receive this notification via email, to whichever person you indicated as the primary contact in your initial application. This assessment is an important part of our due diligence to ensure that grant funding is having its intended impact, as well as to provide us with information on how we can continue to improve our work with valuable community partners.
