Getting a First Job

Whether your teen is babysitting, mowing lawns, flipping burgers, working in an office, or otherwise preparing for a career, a first job can provide a positive, educational, confidence-building experience. After all, a first job represents more than just work. It provides:

  • An opportunity to develop independence both personally and financially.
  • A chance to learn lessons that remain pertinent throughout life.
  • A first exposure to dealing with supervisors, coworkers and/or the public.
  • A way to learn responsibility and develop a strong work ethic.

Our focus in this section is on first “real” jobs, with an employer or business. Use these materials to help point your teen in the right direction toward financial independence.

A first job brings along many financial firsts, including:
  • A first paycheck.
  • A first encounter with payroll taxes.
  • A first opportunity to earn income and get serious about saving.
